In memory of Hermann Otto Hirschfeld

The Lecture Series is named after a remarkable German American scientist Hermann Otto Hirschfeld (H. O. Hartley). After beginning his academic career in Germany, Hirschfeld immigrated to England after the Nazis came to power and subsequently changed his name to Hartley. In 1953 he became Visiting Research Professor at Iowa State College, now known as Iowa State University. A brilliant statistician, Hartley became the 74th president of the American Statistical Association and had an enormous impact in promoting statistics education in US universities; in 1963 he founded Texas A&M University's department of statistics. Since 2003, the Hermann Otto Hirschfeld Lectures have been given at Humboldt-University in memory of this outstanding scientist and advocate of quantitative methods.
